Tick-borne encephalitis cases recorded in Ukraine over the period of 1990-2018
J. Travel Med. 2020, in press, doi.org/10.1093/jtm/taaa080

In contrast to most of the EU countries, information about TBE is insufficient in non-EU countries. An example is Ukraine, from where no data was so far available from peer-reviewed journals. This has now changed. Based on official data, reported TBE cases from 1990 through 2018 are now disclosed.

During the time span mentioned above, a total of 459 cases have been reported, of which 21 (9.5%) were travel-related (most cases were imported from Russia). The annual number of reported TBE cases varied from zero to five and were detected in almost half of the administrative regions (called oblasts) of Ukraine.

Based on these valid data, Ukraine clearly is a TBE endemic country and visitors of this country should consider getting vaccinated.
