A total of 485 TBE cases have been reported in Germany in 2017, which is 40% more compared to 2016 (348 cases). Since 2001, the yearly number of reported cases has been fluctuating between 195 and 546. Currently, 156 counties are considered TBE risk areas of which ten have recently been declared of risk to acquire TBE. All new counties are adjacent to already known risk areas or adjoin the Czech Republic. Most cases were reported from Bavaria (231), Baden-Wuerttemberg (160) and Hesse (18).
