TBE in Germany, 2023<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A total of 475 TBE cases were reported in Germany in 2023 (565 cases in 2022). Three TBE virus infections were fatal (ages over 50, 60 and 80 years, respectively). Most infections occurred from May to October, and most cases were reported from Bavaria (51.1%, Baden-Wuerttemberg (28.2%), Saxony (8.9%) and Hesse (3.3%). In some cases, the consumption of non-pasteurized milk or milk products were the possible cause of infection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A total of 180 counties are now assessed TBE risk areas (two new risk areas in Brandenburg and Thuringia). Bremen and Hamburg are the only federal states with no TBE cases reported so far. 95% of the 2,205 TBE cases reported from 2019 to 2023 were acquired in 62 counties with the highest incidence. From 2002 to 2023, a total of 187 TBE cases were reported from non-risk regions, most of these cases were in Lower Saxony, Hesse, and North Rhine-Westphalia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

TBE diagnostic becomes more complex due to the circulation of West Nile Fever virus, especially in eastern Germany.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

TBE in Austria, 2023<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A total of 104 hospitalized TBE patients have been reported in 2023. In addition, 14 TBE outpatients were notified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most patients were infected in Upper Austria (N=32), Tyrol (N=17) and Salzburg (N=14). The youngest patient was 3 years old (meningoencephalitis), the oldest was 84 years old (meningoencephalitis).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

64.4% of the patients were older than 50 years of age, 10.6% were children younger than 15 years of age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
