TBE detected on Funen and in Jutland in 2018
EPI-News no. 12/14 -2019

While TBE has been known to exist on the island of Bornholm for many years, no TBE cases have been reported from other regions of Denmark, except in 2008 and 2009 when two persons had become infected in Tokkekøb Hegn (near Copenhagen). The TBE virus isolated here was genetically closely related to strains from Sweden and Norway.

Since then, about one TBE case per year has been reported from Bornholm, but not from other Danish regions. In 2018 however, two TBE cases have been reported outside of Bornholm. One place of infection probably was the Faaborg area (south of Odense), and the other place of infection was an area in Central or South Jutland. For 2019, tick-flagging is planned to identify the TBE foci. No changes in the current vaccination recommendations were made, which continue to apply only to Bornholm.
