The number of reported TBE cases is fluctuating from year to year. Here, we compare three central European countries in reference to the number of reported cases at the end of July for 2022, 2021 and 2020.

In Switzerland, the total number of reported TBE cases until July 26, 2022, was 241. This was more than in 2021 (174 cases), but fewer compared to 2020 (277), the year with an all-time high in the number of reported TBE cases in Central Europe.

In Austria, 115 TBE cases have been reported until July 31, 2022, compared to 70 cases in 2021 and 149 cases in 2020.

In Germany, the number of reported cases until week 30, 2022 was 278, compared to 259 in 2021 and 280 cases in 2020.

The weekly reported TBE cases cannot directly be compared due to possible later registration of some infections.

However, fact-finding in the middle of the TBE season shows significantly more TBE cases in Austria, Switzerland and Germany in 2022 compared to 2021. If extrapolated to the end of the year, one can expect a season with a high number of reported TBE cases in Central Europe.

The editor is grateful to Paulina Peters for sharing unpublished data about TBE cases in Austria.
