This report is based on data for 2020 retrieved from the European Surveillance System (TESSy) on October 25, 2021.

For 2020, 24 EU/EEA countries reported data on TBE: 19 countries used various versions of the EU case definition for TBE, three countries reported using another case definition and two countries did not specify which case definition was used.

For 2020, a total of 3817 TBE cases were reported to TESSy from 24 EU/EEA countries of which 98.8% were confirmed. Of 3029 cases with known outcome, 16 died from TBE (case fatality rate: 0.5%).

Notification rate was highest in Lithuania (24.3 cases per 100,000 population), followed by Slovenia (8.9) and Czechia (7.9).

The EU/EEA notification rate of 0.9 per 100,000 population for 2020 represents a further increase compared to previous years.

94.7% of the confirmed cases were reported as not vaccinated against TBE. The report presents detailed data about the number of confirmed TBE cases and rates per 100,000 population by country and year and by month from 2016–2020 as well as by age and gender of the patients.
